Oct 01, 2018 (newstodate): As SAS opens its flights from Copenhagen to Hong Kong with the first flight on October 28, 2018, another carrier throws the towel into the ring: Cathay Pacific.
Heralded as a major success for Copenhagen Airport, the oneworld member-carrier has been offering three weekly rotations with Airbus A350-900 aircraft with the inaugural flight on May 1, 2018.
The period of services was originally set to end by October 12, 2018, but the service was later prolonged till October 26, 2018, seemingly spurred by a positive response in the market from the start of the booking period - and hopes were that the seasonal route would be changed in to year-round services.
Now Cathay has announced that its seasonal flights to Copenhagen will not be on the timetable in 2019, following a commercial evaluation of the carrier's network and the utilization of the fleet on Europe, as the message reads.
As one concrete example of this strategic evaluation, Cathay Pacific is raising the frequency on flights from Hong Kong to Frankfurt from seven to 10 weekly rotations in summer 2019.
Cathay Pacific last served Scandinavia with flights from Hong Kong to Stockholm, Sweden, from February 14, 1995, first routed via Frankfurt and later operated as direct non-stop flights from winter 1995, but the airline pulled out again after a few years.
Since September 10, 2015, SAS has been operating flights from Stockholm to Hong Kong with five weekly rotations using Airbus A340/330 on the route - and the carrier's move of these services to Copenhagen Airport instead has now caused Cathay Pacific to pull out.
