Jan 23, 2018 (newstodate): Kazakhstan is determined to develop its aviation business to gain enhanced connectivity with Europe.
The Civil Aviation Committee of the Kazakh Ministry of Investment and Development has thus announced that 2018 will see the opening of flights on new routes by Kazakh airlines to new markets including Latvia.
Plans are thus to open flights between Astana and Riga as part of a batch of nine new route openings, either operated by Air Astana or SCAT Airlines.
In November 2017 it emerged that starting from 2018, airBaltic will launch services between between Riga and Astana operated with Bombardier CS300 aircraft.
Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan until Astana was constructed in the north, was earlier on airBaltic's route network.
With the first flight on April 17, 2008, airBaltic started serving the route with two weekly rotations from Riga using Boeing 737 aircraft, but pulled out again from the start of the winter schedule 2009/10 as the crisis hit the global economy.
In November 2017, SCAT Airlines also announced plans to launch services between Astana and Vilnius from May 2018 as its first route into EU.
