Jan 30, 2018 (newstodate): Work on the construction of a new international airport to serve the Mongolian capital is now close to completion.
Originally slated for commissioning already by the end of 2016, the airport is now expected to open for traffic by October 2018 with a 3,339 m runway and an earthquake-resistant ATC tower.
The project was started in 2013 under a JV between Mitsubishi Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation, and the airport will be operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia.
Designed to the handling of three million passengers from the outset, land and resources have been allocated with a view to a later expansion to raise handling capacity to 12 million passengers annually.
The current capital airport, Chinggis Khaan International Airport has one 3,100 m runway and another 2,000 m runway covered with grass.
The existing airport is however operationally restricted by its location marked by unfavorable climatic conditions, strong winds and mountainous surroundings, which makes a full implementation of ICAO standards difficult
