Jan 18, 2018 (newstodate): Despite declining mail traffic, Sweden's Jonkoping Airport managed to keep 2016-levels in 2017.
A total of 4,095 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport, a modest increase by 0.1 percent, y-o-y.
In 2017, mail volumes dropped by two percent, y-o-y, while cargo on integrator flights increased only one percent, reflecting the continued shortage of capacity on the cargo aircraft used on flights to Jonkoping.
-The sustained drop in mail volumes has led to a change in postal commitments. While 85 percent of all Class-A letters should earlier be delivered over-night, the requirement is now instead for 95 percent of all letters to be delivered within two week-days, says Herman Larsson, now cargo consultant to the airport after his retirement from the position as Jonkoping Airport Marketing Manager by the end of 2017.
-Consequently, PostNord has decided to close down a number of postal flights into Stockholm Arlanda from Vaxjo, Jonkoping and Umeaa by April 1, 2018. Details in the process have still not been communicated, says Mr Larsson.
Turn-over from cargo constitute about one-third of the airport's totals, but cargo operations are today serving only few customers during a brief period of the night leaving the airport with a full-scale security-certified cargo terminal with much excess capacity to be utilized.
Mr Larsson has thus been engaged to support the airport's new Marketing Manager, Henrik Alverdal, in seeking new business opportunities for Jonkoping Airport's cargo facility.
