Jan 16, 2018 (newstodate): Last year's air cargo volumes through Finland's Helsinki Airport was at five-years' record high levels.
As earlier reported, the airport handled 194,273 tonnes in 2017 which was an increase by 6.6 percent, y-o-y.
Levels in 2017 thus outperformed 2016 when 182,201 tonnes were handled after a 2.7 percent growth - and 2015 ended with a drop by 6.3 percent to 177,415 tonnes, 2014 ended with 189,294 tonnes and down 0.5 percent, while a total of 190,175 tonnes was handled in 2014 when volumes also dipped one percent, y-o-y.
Behind the significant growth in 2017 is the rising Asian traffic that will be further boosted in 2018 by Finnair with higher frequencies on existing flights as well as the opening of new routes, including the opening of flights from Helsinki to Nanjing starting from May 13, 2018, as the carrier's 7th destination in China.
The increasing Asian traffic will also benefit from the opening from January 8, 2018, of Finnair's new COOL terminal at Helsinki Airport facilitating the airline's goal of increasing its cargo volumes by 50 percent in 2020, boosted by the continuing delivery of new Airbus A350 long-haul aircraft
