Jan 19, 2018 (newstodate): Finnair has big plans for a continued expansion of its long-haul network, especially targeting the Asian markets - and this requires a growth in the wide-body fleet.
In February 2017, the last of seven Airbus A340 aircraft left the fleet and the plan was to get rid of two of the eight A330 aircraft once the first A350 were in operation.
But instead, all of the A330 aircraft were retained and will remain in the fleet until early next decade.
-In the long-haul fleet today are thus eight Airbus A330 and 11 Airbus A350 aircraft, and the wide-body fleet will grow to 22 in 2020 and to 26 by 2023, Finnair CEO said in an interview with AirlineRatings.
New in 2018 will be Finnair flights from Helsinki to Nanjing from this summer, and the carrier also plans to add flights to Tokyo Haneda airport in addition to the existing services to Tokyo Narita Airport.
Finnair would also like to increase frequency on flights to Beijing and Seoul which is, however, today hindered by shortage of slots.
