Jan 17, 2018 (newstodate): Scheduled Airbus A380 services means a boost to an airport's image. But does it pay?
Emirates has long been rumored to be interested in scheduling its Airbus A380 on flights between Dubai and Warsaw Airport, in Poland.
May 2018 has earlier been aired for the start of Emirates' daily A380 operations between Dubai and Warsaw, replacing the current Boeing 777-300ER now used on the route.
The airport is not, however, overly happy with the super jumbo.
Speaking at a press conference on January 16, 2018, the Director of Warsaw Airport confirmed that Emirates has indeed applied to the airport concerning A380 operations, but the airport sees certain problems.
-Are the A380's strategic objectives the airport's strategic goal? Definitely not. It is about prestige, but at the end of the day, the economy counts, the director said, as reported by Polish media.
The airport would rather plan for more operations by aircraft like Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 as well as Boeing 787 aircraft, while plans for aircraft like the Airbus A380 do not have high priority.
According to Warsaw Airport, the A380 requires too much space for parking and maneuvering on tarmac and runways as well as construction of dedicated gates to handling of passengers - all translating into considerable costs.
It thus remains uncertain if Warsaw Airport will eventually bid welcome to Emirates' Airbus A380 operations on a daily basis.
Emirates first launched services from Dubai to Warsaw on February 6, 2013, with Airbus A330-200 aircraft that were later replaced from June 1, 2014, with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft capacity.
