Sep 14, 2017 (newstodate): Latvia's Liepaja Airport's hopes to secure year-round flights have now been fulfilled.
airBaltic has announced its decision to extend its services on the route connecting Liepaja on Latvia's west coast with Riga from seasonal to year-round flights as the coming new winter schedule takes effect from October 31, 2017.
Following on the completion of the long process of airport reconstruction works and certification, Liepaja Airport 210 km west of Riga was reopened for regular commercial traffic on September 19, 2016.
Still the only carrier with scheduled flights at Liepaja Airport is airBaltic that returned domestic flights between Riga and Liepaja from May 16, 2017, offering three weekly rotations with Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
airBaltic first opened domestic flights from Riga to Liepaja in September, 2005, adding services from Liepaja to Hamburg and Copenhagen from May 9, 2007, even airing further plans for connections to Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki as well.
The flights from Liepaja to Copenhagen and Hamburg were continued until October 18, 2008, but flights on the domestic route from Liepaja to Riga were suspended after October 1, 2008, already.
The now-defunct Russian carrier Atlant-Soyuz also operated flights from 2008 between Liepaja and Moscow.
