Sep 28, 2017 (newstodate): Political instabilities are increasingly putting commercial airline operations under new stress.
Following on the re-routing by several airlines of flights close to North Korean air space between Europe and Japan, the recent plebiscite in Iraq's Kurdistan autonomous region is forcing carrier to rethink their air services to this region as well.
As a result, international flights to Erbil and Sulaymania may be in danger as Iraq's government has threatened to take over full control of the traffic considered under the Iraqi state's sole authority.
Iraq's Civil Aviation Authority has thus announced that as of September 27, 2017, all international flights to the two Kurdish airports will be prohibited while only Iraqi domestic flights will be allowed.
Several Middle East airlines including the Lebanese Middle East Airlines, Egypt Air, flyDubai and Royal Jordanian have already announced that their services to the two airports will be suspended, while Germania and Lufthansa are still monitoring the situation and the future of their operations into the region.
