Aug 03, 2017 (newstodate): Plans for the reopening of Latvia's Daugavpils Airport, until 1993 a Soviet air force base, now seem to have been finally abandoned.
In 2005, Daugavpils City Council founded Daugavpils Airport Ltd. to seek to develop the former military air base into Daugavpils International Airport.
Hopes were to build by 2015 an international and regional airport in Daugavpils capable of handling both international and domestic passenger traffic, international and domestic cargo transport and charter flights.
The plans included the reconstruction of the airport's badly maintained 2,500m runway as well as new passenger and cargo facilities.
The airport lost its certification in 2015, and the chairman of board of the airport company has now thrown the towel into the ring, declaring that there is no money to finance the reconstruction of the airport, and a new airport manager will also not be named.
Only private financing or EU funds may revive throughts of reactivating the airport that would serve Latvia's second-largest city.
