Aug 08, 2017 (newstodate): A new candidate for conversion of passenger aircraft to freighter is the Airbus A321.
Precision and ATSG have announced the formation of a JV named 321 Precision Conversions for Passenger-to-Freighter Conversion of Airbus A321-200 Aircraft, with capability to compete with Boeing 757 freighters, and low operating costs comparable to smaller Boeing 737 freighters, making it an attractive platform for air express network operators.
As of July 30, 2017, a total of 1,425 Airbus A321-200 passenger aircraft are in service, and after conversion the A321-200 P2F aircraft will have the capacity to carry about 15 ULDs.
Airbus has announced its own program for A321 P2F, and earlier expected to have its first converted freighter in the air in 2018, but so far no firm contract has been signed with a launch customer.
In Airbus' project, the A321 P2F with 14 main-deck positions plus 10 belly container positions will be able to carry up to 27 tonnes over 1,900nm.
Adding up the total containerized volume, it equals the volume of more than 16.5 upper deck containers.
