Aug 09, 2017 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new airport to serve Greenland's capital Nuuk are emerging.
As a reconstruction of the current airport, the coming new airport will have a 2,200m runway, sufficient to serve Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft while the existing 950m runway was only capable of serving small turboprop aircraft.
The existing passenger terminal will be demolished and replaced by a new facility, and a new tower will be constructed as the existing one will be too close to the runway area.
With the coming new airport in operation, Greenland would see transatlantic flights directly into the capital in contrast to today's need for time-consuming and expensive transfers from Kangerlussuaq Airport in the south.
Behind the planning is Kalaallit Airport A/S, set up in June 2016 by Greenland's government.
Since the end of April 2017, the construction programs for new airports at Ilulissat, Nuuk and Qaqortoq have been in place, serving as the framework for tendering the design work on the airports.
In parallel with this work, Kalaallit Airport is also to work out a plan for the financing of the costly projects that will exhaust the financial muscles of Greenland itself.
