Aug 23, 2017 (newstodate): For many airlines, Lithuania is identical to Vilnius Airport. That may have changed...
As Vilnius Airport was temporarily closed for operations during the period from July 14 to August 17, 2017, due to the runway resurfacing project, air traffic was moved to Kaunas Airport instead.
-I think the experience by airlines at Kanuas Airport has really opened their eyes to this airport as well, says Gediminas Almantas, Lithuanian Airports CEO.
-All staff at Kaunas Airport worked enthusiastically during the period to prove the efficiency of the airport, accepting night shifts and any workloads required to keep the traffic moving on time. It was really a huge challenge, and Kaunas Airport lived fully up to the task.
-I am confident that this has opened the eyes in the airline industry, and I would expect Kaunas Airport to see new airline customers in the near future. After all, the airport has all infrastructure and staff in place to meet any requirements, and passengers will easily feed into the airport from all corners of the country, says Mr Almantas.
In July 2017, passenger volumes at Kaunas Airport jumped by 236.15 percent, y-o-y, to 235,874, while cargo through the airport also increased by 171.95 percent to 434 tonnes.
Even apart from the unusual high loads during July 2017, the airport has consistently increased its passenger and cargo volumes month by month.
