Aug 30, 2017 (newstodate): Provider of handling services at Iceland's Keflavik Airport, Airport Associates is growing its volume of business in passenger and cargo handling.
-Airport Associates now accunts for some 40-45 percent of the total passenger handling market at Keflavik and is seeing significant growth with its existing customer portfolio including not least WOW Air, says Sigthor Skulason, Airport Associates managing director.
-Growth is also seen in the cargo handling market where WOW Air, Cargo Express, Bluebird Cargo, Delta and other companies count among our main customers. With some 30,000 tonnes, our share of the cargo handling market is now probably around 35-40 percent, while I do not have the exact figures.
-WOW Air has announced that it will increase its traffic in 2018 by some 40 percent, and while this bodes well for our continued growth it also represents a challenge for us.
-The problem is that we have absoloutely no space left for expansion of our premises, which is also the situation for other operators at Keflavik. Even as Isavia finalizes its masterplan for Keflavik Airport, it will still require at least two years before land has been allocated and the pertinent infrastructure is in place.
-In the meantime, our response to this stressful situation will be improved flow management and more manpower to cope with growth in volumes and traffic, says Mr Skulason.
Airport Associates has completed construction of a building to contain offices, a load control center, a lounge for corporate jet business, and GSE facilities, and these new premises will become fully operational within the coming month.
With this new building, space in the existing warehouse has been freed to expand the terminal's cooling facility, which is crucial for handling of Iceland's growing volumes of seafood exports.
