Jul 05, 2017 (newstodate): Finland's Helsinki Airport may see a new Chinese low-cost carrier on the runway in 2018.
According to Chinese media, the HNA Group subsidiary Lucky Air has now applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China to open a route from Kunming to Helsinki from July 2018.
Together with HK Express, Urumqi Air, and West Air, Lucky Air is one of the four founding airline members of the U-Fly Alliance - the world's first alliance of low-cost carriers established in January 2016.
Lucky Air, set up in 2004, now operates a fleet comprising 43 aircraft.
Thanks to Finnair, Helsinki has become an important gateway for Chinese tourists to the Nordic as well as the European markets.
As the first Western European airline to establish a direct route to Beijing in 1988, Finnair currently serves six destinations in China including Beijing, Chongqing, Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as summer services to Xi'an and Guangzhou, and the carier operates a total of 35 weekly rotations on routes between Helsinki and China in summer 2017.
