Jun 19, 2017 (newstodate): Expectations are running high for Norwegian salmon exports to virtually explode already in 2017 after a prolonged period of stalemate in the wake of the Nobel prize-issue in 2010.
Prior to 2010, the Norwegian salmon accounted for about 90 percent of Chinas salmon imports, but the Nobel prize-issue brought Chinas import of Norwegian salmon virtually to a halt.
The negative trend has sustained till today, seeing Norway's share in the Chinese market down to 5-6 percent, allowing Chile to snatch the lead position, followed by the Faroe Islands and Scotland.
Fresh Norwegian estimates are that the export to China may reach 70,000 tonnes by 2020 - once the Chinese Wall really opens up.
And according to a prediction by Norwegian Seafood Council, China's total full-year import of Norwegian salmon may already rise to 42,000 tons in 2017.
Attention is now focusing on the issue of air logistics to serve the expectdly steep rise in salmon exports to China from Oslo or another Norwegian airport.
