May 01, 2017 (newstodate): Rather surprisingly, given the political rift between the two countries, a Turkish carrier is to launch flights into the capital of Armenia.
Starting from June 1, 2017, Pegasus Airlines will start flights between Istanbul and Yerevan, offering daily rotations on the route.
Armenia and Turkey do not have official commercial and diplomatic
ties after the war over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Also souring the relations between the two countries is the issue of the recognition of the 1915 Armenian genocide.
Despite this, business traffic between the two countries is growing rapidly, warranting the opening of the new route.
Armenia has now launched negotiations with EU on a Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement, and when this process is completed, Armenia will be able to join the common EU Aviation Area.
