May 02, 2017 (newstodate): Lithuania may see the opening of a new offer for flights between the Moscow region and Vilnius.
On April 28, 2017, the Russian carrier Yamal Airlines was granted rights to operate up to seven weekly rotations on a new route to Vilnius from Moscow's Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport 40 km from Moscow, and the carrier is now analyzing the market situation before making a final decision on when and if to launch flights.
Yamal Airlines operates a fleet comprising 36 aircraft on primarily domestic routes in Russia as well as to Belarus and Montenegro in Europe in addition to routes to Kazakhstan, Israel and the Gulf region.
Officially opened on May 30, 2016, the 4th international airport to serve the Moscow area, Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport has so far found it hard to lure airlines to set up traffic.
In January 2014, Lithuania's Avia Solutions Group and Russia's state-owned Rostec Group entered a JV to develop and manage Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport that has two runways, one of which is the longest in Europe - 5,400m.
The need for a fourth airport to relive congestion at airports in the Moscow region was imperative at the time the project was launched, but with the dampening of Russian air traffic since the imposition of sanctions on the country after the Crimean annexation and the participation in the war in Ukraine, the airport is facing problems in filling its apron with customers.
