May 01, 2017 (newstodate): Latvia may be set to lose its current direct flight between Riga Airport and New York, provided by Uzbekistan Airways.
According to press reports, the carrier will introduce the new Boeing 787-7 aircraft on the route between Tashkent and New York via Riga from May 18, 2017, and plans are next, sources say, to cut the en-route stop at Riga from July 27 as the aircraft will be fully capable of flying the route non-stop.
The airline actually first operated the Dreamliner on the route via Riga on January 6, 2017, on an ad-hoc basis.
Since October 31, 2004, Uzbekistan Airways has been using Riga Airport as a transit hub on its twice-weekly Boeing 767-300ER flights between Tashkent and New York, and since October 23, 2004, airBaltic and Uzbekistan Airways have cooperated under a code-share agreement covering the flights between Tashkent and Riga, expanding this agreement from July 2015 to comprise also the flights by the Uzbek carrier between Riga and New York.
Uzbekistan Airways took delivery of its first two Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in 2016 and has now placed orders for a further four aircraft.
newstodate is working on securing a confirmation of the issue from Uzbekistan Airways.
