May 31, 2017 (newstodate): The Skyteam carrier carrier China Eastern Airlines is planning for launch of a spree of new routes in support of China's hyped Belt and Road Initiative.
Building on a narrow interpretation of the ancient Silk Road concept, the carrier plans to open flights from Xi'an that was a key point on the Silk Road infrastructure.
Among the new routes to be opened from Xi'an already in 2017 is Prague, in the Czech Republic.
Since April 2, 2016, the carrier has been operating flights on the route between Shanghai and Prague, and the new route from Xi'an is expected to further boost the traffic between the two markets.
Other coming new routes from Xi'an by China Eastern include flights to St Petersburg, Irkutsk, Vancouver and Saipan, and the carrier is already offering flights from Xi'an to Sydney and Moscow.
Finnair was the first, and still the only, European airline to launch direct, non-stop services to Xian Xianyang International Airport with the inauguration flight on June 15, 2013, adding this destination as its 5th in China, alongside Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Hong Kong.
