May 12, 2017 (newstodate): Are plans, first aired as far back as in 1989, for direct non-stop Boeing 747 flights by Baltia Air Lines between New York JFK and St Petersburg still alive?
Actually not - but the visions are obviously still alive: the project has changed its name to USGlobal Airways.
During 2016, Baltia Air Lines underwent significant corporate and operational changes, including new leadership that has made the very significant decision to hub its operation at Stewart International Airport, north of New York City.
While the key driver behind Baltia was the plan to set up direct nonstop air traffic between New York and St Petersburg, in Russia, the focus has now turned instead to establishing flights between Stewart International Airport and destinations in former East Europe and selected European countries covered by the US-EU Open Skies Agreement.
USGlobal Airways now plans to lease a fleet of Boeing 767-300 aircraft which will carry passengers, cargo and mail between Stewart International Airport to destinations such as London, Paris, Barcelona, Nice, Naples, Athens, Warsaw, Budapest, Prague, St. Petersburg and Tel Aviv.
So indeed - ambitions have survived after all these years...
