May 17, 2017 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic has restored domestic air services in the country.
With the opening flight on May 16, 2017, airBaltic is now online on the domestic route between Riga and Liepaja Airport, near the Baltic coast and 210 km west of Riga, the only domestic route in Latvia now with three weekly rotations using Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
Following the completion of the long process of airport reconstruction works and certification, Liepaja Airport was reopened for non-commercial aviation services from May 26, 2016, and fully open for regular commercial traffic from September 19, 2016.
Liepaja Airport, originally built for military purposes, was transferred to civil authority in 1960 and is now part of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
airBaltic first opened the domestic route from Riga on September 5, 2005, bringing domestic flights back to Latvia with four weekly flights, but the operations were since suspended for a decade.
