May 11, 2017 (newstodate): If you thought that the Chinese e-trade portal Alibaba is only toys, garments and gadgets, think twice..
That is at least what Norway is doing as Alibaba will start promoting Norwegian seafood, primarily fresh salmon in cooperation with Norway's Seafood Council.
The new cooperation will take shape as a large seafood exporters' delegation, headed by the country's Minister for Fisheries will visit China in May 22-24, 2017.
The minister will officially open a seafood seminar where Norwegian exporters and Chinese companies can meet to discuss concrete future trade deals and negotiate contracts.
A visit to Alibaba's website shows that seafood and salmon is already part of the offerings - but primarily for shipments in tonnes..
Once the cork is unscrewed, expectations are that exports to China of fresh Norwegian seafood can reach up to 70,000 tonnes annually by 2020, already.
