Apr 07, 2017 (newstodate): No efforts are spared to see a resumption of Norway's export of seafood to the Chinese market where Norway was a key provider of fresh salmon until the yearlong rift over the Nobel Prize issue.
The ice broke shortly before Christmas 2016 and since then events have gained pace.
After a lapse of six years, the veterinary authorities from both countries have met to open the road for Norwegian exports to China, and a Chinese VET delegation will visit Norway after Easter while Norway's prime minister is heading for China for another meeting to further break the stalemate.
Before 2010 and the crisis over the Nobel Prize to a Chinese dissident, Norway provided some 90 percent of China's fresh salmon imports, but this proportion since declined to less than 30 percent - and came to almost a full stop despite efforts to slide-through shipments through certain back doors in the form of re-export through other markets and territories.
As late as during the first eight months 2010, the exports volumes of fresh Norwegian salmon by air to Chinese consumers still reached 19,300 tonnes.
Fresh Norwegian estimates are that the export to China may reach 70,000 tonnes by 2020 - once the Chinese Wall really opens up.
