Apr 06, 2017 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier RAF-AVIA has adjusted its strategy focusing on Hahn Airport as the carrier's second base after Riga Airport.
Instead of basing the fleet of four AN-26 freighters at Hahn Airport, RAF-Avia now allows the individual freighter to stay at its last station after a completed mission, ferrying the aircraft from there to the next station for start of a new assignment.
-This actually works quite smoothly and saves on empty ferry flights to and from base, says Jelena Rigere, RAF-Avia Commercial Director.
-The AN-25 freighter needs a line maintenance check every 20 flight hours, and with our mostly short flights this translates into one check per week. This is performed by flight mechanics sent from either of our two bases.
-Despite this change in strategy, Hahn Airport remains our second European base, completing our main base at Riga Airport, says Ms Rigere.
RAF-Avia is now operating four AN-26 freighter that will be phased out gradually, with the first to leave by January 2018.
Instead, the carrier is to take in ATR-72 freighters with the first to be delivered in a month and second to follow in summer 2017.
RAF-Avia also operates four SAAB 340 aircraft, with two in freighter and two in passenger configuration placed on an extended AOC from September 1, 2016.
