Apr 03, 2017 (newstodate): There is definitely a market for transportation of seafood exports from the Faroe Islands - but airfreight still plays only a limited role.
-With our aircraft we can lift some three tonnes of cargo per flight on the route between Vagar and Copenhagen. This is of limited impact in the market, says Johanna a Berghi, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-Faroese exporters benefit from several options in maritime freight that offer down to two days of transportation to harbors in the UK or Denmark at rates that are two or three times cheaper than airfreight.
-I see a future, though, for the Faroe Islands' airfreight in seafood niche products coming in smaller volumes but with higher value - and therefore more attractive for air transportation, says Mrs a Berghi.
The country's largest producer of seafood is Bakkafrost that alone now produces around 56,000 tonnes per year of fresh salmon, and adding volumes handled for other producers the total Bakkafrost production will reach between 60-70,000 tonnes in 2017.
Bakkafrost is, however, also in the process of developing new seafood product that may become relevant for Atlantic Airways and future newcomers to Vagar Airport.
-As a first step, we will utilize the existing aircraft cargo capacity, and as the markets for our advanced new products develop we will consider the introduction of a dedicated freighter service that will, of course, require a considerable volume and a sound economic basis to secure a sustainable service. This phase may take months, or years, to develop, said Bakkafrost's CEO, Regin Jacobsen, told newstodate on January 17, 2017.
