Mar 15, 2017 (newstodate): After a period in the freezer, relations between Turkey and Russia are warming up again - and may even result in open skies for civil aviation.
At least the Turkish president has urged for introduction of open skies in air services, adding that there should be no limitations at all in frequencies on flights between destinations in the two nations.
As of now, the air services are based on an agreement from December 2016 when one Turkish destination was added to the eight already contained in earlier agreement while the Turkish side was granted access to two more destinations in Russia, and on specific routes up to seven weekly rotations were allowed for designated carriers from both sides.
Air traffic including charters was severely cut during the cold period from November 2016 till December 2016 after the Turkish side shot down a Russian fighter allegedly flying into Turkish airspace from Syria.
In 2015, a total of 5.4 mio passengers was carried on charter flights from Russia to Turkish leisure destinations, and the shortfall of Russian tourism has caused a severe blow to Turkey's economy.
