Mar 21, 2017 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands will see the first flight by SAS into Vagar Airport from Copenhagen on March 27, 2017.
SAS will thus add 12 weekly services with Airbus A320 Family aircraft - but while this will boost the volume of passengers through the airport, it will not have a sizeable effect on the provision of cargo capacity for the seafood exporters.
-We are currently exporting some 1,500 tonnes of seafood per week so the, say, three tonnes maximum cargo capacity on SAS will make no difference for us, says Regin Jacobsen, Bakkafrost CEO and owner of the country's largest seafood company.
-Our logistics remains based on export of the shipments by sea to Scotland and from there by truck in London Heathrow Airport where the abundance of flight options will lift the shipments to the global market place, especially North America, with Boston as one preferred destination.
-Would we like to see a dedicated US-bound freighter service at Vagar Airport? Of course, and if a viable project was presented to us we would consider issues including commitment and risk-sharing.
-But so far all projects have stranded on the problem with imbalanced operations. We can fill up any cargo capacity, but there is little to bring into the Faroe Islands. A triangular flight might be a solution, but it is not up to us to figure that out, says Mr Jacobsen.
Bakkafrost alone now produces around 56,000 tonnes of fresh salmon, and adding the volumes handled for other producers the total Bakkafrost production will reach between 60-70,000 tonnes in 2017.
