Mar 23, 2017 (newstodate): The ambitious plans for development of Greenland's airports infrastructure are now taking steps towards a concrete time schedule.
Behind the planning is Kalaallit Airport A/S, set up in June 2016 by Greenland's government.
By the end of April 2017, the construction programs for new airports at Ilulissat, Nuuk and Qaqortoq will be in place, serving as the framework for tendering the design work on the airports.
In parallel with this work, Kalaallit Airport is also to work out a plan for the financing of the costly projects that will exhaust the financial muscles of Greenland itself.
Plans are now that a new airport of Qaqortoq will have its runway extended to 1,500m by 2020, while the airports at Ilulissat og Nuuk will have runways extended to 2,200m by 2022.
Earlier, the plans built on the expansion of the runway at the capital airport at Nuuk from today's 950m to 1,800m, Ilulissat Airport would have its runway extended to 1,800m from today's 845m, and a new airport would be constructed at Qaqortoq with a 1,200m runway.
