Mar 13, 2017 (newstodate): Since 2013, Latvia's Jurmala Tukums Airport has had ambitions to become the country's second international airport - but nothing has happened.
Maybe things are about to change: the airport has found a new private investor with muscles to build a new future for the airport that has a history as a Soviet air force base, located only slightly more than one hour's drive from Riga, the country's capital, and also connected to Riga by a train service.
On October 10, 2016, the airport had its Environmental Impact Assessment renewed, and on March 15, the new strategic investor Raimonds Kisiels and the members of the board will inform the media about the future plans and the development opportunities of the airport, Latvian media report.
Currently serving general and corporate aviation only, Jurmala Tukums Airport with one 2,500 m runway, new runway lighting system and ILS, has been waiting the the environmental clearance since 2014, obstructing any hopes for a resumption of commercial services.
The airport hopes for a future with low-cost operators as well as charter companies, and hopes are also that the airport may serve as a back-up to Riga Airport for the Latvian carrier airBaltic.
