Mar 27, 2017 (newstodate): March 26, 2017, opened a new chapter in the development of competition in air services at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport.
SAS thus made its first flight on the route between Copenhagen and Vagar, now to be served in direct competition to the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways that has reigned supreme as the sole provider for 10 years.
SAS will operate the route 12 times per week with Airbus A319/A320 aircraft depending on the booking figures, alongside Atlantic Airways' two daily rotations during the winter season and four daily rotations during the summer peak season, in addition to two year-round rotations between Vagar and Billund and two seasonal rotation between Vagar and Aalborg during the summer season.
Flights on the route were started in 1988 by Atlantic Airways, and until 2004 Maersk Air also operated flights between Vagar and Copenhagen.
Last time the Atlantic route between the Faroe Islands and Denmark saw competition was in 2006 as the privately-owned FaroeJet launched flights between Vagar and Copenhagen with a single Avro RJ-100 aircraft on May 15, 2006.
Backed by Faroese investors comprising banks, transport companies, and private individuals, FaroeJet offered up to two daily rotations on the route but folded its wings already on December 17, 2006, running out of financing to support the costly start-up period.
