Mar 23, 2017 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport is seeing modest growth in cargo volumes, January-February 2017.
In January, the airport handled 38.5 tonnes of cargo, which was an increase by 6.1 percent, y-o-y.
February brought little improvement as volumes, totaling 36.4 tonnes were only 0.8 percent above last year's total, so for the first two months of the year total are now up only 3.3 percent, y-o-y, to 74.9 tonnes.
Mail performed a bit better, with a total of 39.9 tonnes during Jan-Feb, an increase by 9.6 percent, y-o-y.
So far, all air cargo remains transported by the sole operator of the routes to and from the Faroe Islands, Atlantic Airways that will, however, see competition on the trunk route between Vagar and Copenhagen from March 26, 2017, as SAS starts a new service with a total of 12 weekly flights with Airbus A320 aircraft.
This is, however, still insignificant on the cargo side where the Faroe Islands' leading seafood exporter, Bakkafrost exports some 1,500 tonnes of seafood per week by sea to Scotland for transfer into London Heathrow's extensive global route network.
