Feb 10, 2017 (newstodate): Iceland's Keflavik Airport is close to its saturation point as traffic continues to build up with new airlines streaming into Iceland.
An analysis has been conducted by a group established in 2013, and the findings indicate that Hvassahraun might be the ideal location for a new international airport to serve the country, closer to Reykjavik and to the east of the existing Keflavik Airport.
Conditions taken into consideration include environment, climatic conditions, space and costs.
While little has been heard lately of the project, Icelandair this week performed a test flight with a Boeing 757-200 including three approaches into Hvassahraun to asses the operational conditions.
While the Hvassahraun alternative may thus become a valid proposal for a new airport, foreigners will undoubtedly find it hard to pronounce the name..
