Feb 07, 2017 (newstodate): E-commerce is a new driver in the industry, with customers increasingly shopping globally via the internet.
This creates a boom in transport and logistics as well - but it is not just an immediate benefit for the transport industries..
UPS has thus announced a drop by 29.2 percent, y-o-y, in its net profits in 2016 while revenues were still up by four percent.
The drop in net profits is attributed to the sharp turn in the market from B2B to B2C transactions, meaning that rather than a smaller number of large consolidated shipments the transportation industry is increasingly carrying and distributing a growing number of small parcels requiring more handling and documentation efforts - and thus leading to higher operational costs.
In December 2016 alone, the B2C segment accounted for 63 percent of all deliveries.
