Nov 10, 2017 (newstodate): Not quite unexpectedly, the conclusion of the latest round of Russia/Scandinavia aviation talks did not produce a break-through for Norwegian's hopes for traffic rights.
The original 1956 agreement with the then Soviet Union gave SAS an exclusive right to use airspace over Siberia on routes to Asia as sole Scandinavian designated carrier.
And this remains in place..
-We are deceived that the Norwegian negotiators did not do more to secure a Norwegian carrier rights on equal terms for flights on the fastest route from Norway to China, South Korea and Japan, Lasse Sandaker-Nielsen, Norwegian VP Corporate Communications, said to Norwegian Media after the negotiations ended on November 9, 2017.
The Scandinavian designated carrier SAS operates flights to Asia - but from its bases in Denmark and Sweden only, leaving Norway blank.
