Nov 28, 2017 (newstodate): While the Faroe Islands got its first major seafood air logistics product only earlier this month with the Bakkafrost/SAS Cargo venture, Iceland's seafood exporters have ample access to uplift capacity from Keflavik Airport.
As Iceland's largest seafood exporting company on Icelandair flights, Danica Seafood annually ships some 7,000 tonnes of seafood by air to markets including USA and the UK as well as to other European markets such as Holland, Switzerland and France.
-We started sending seafood shipments by Icelandair to the USA already in 1988, but today other carriers are offering cargo capacity such as WOW Air with a number of flights to USA and to the UK, says Jan B Thomsen, Danica Seafood Executive.
-Sea logistics are, however, always a strong competitor to air services with numerous daily fast routes to Scotland, England and Denmark requiring only two or three days at sea. In the European markets, maritime solutions are actually often competitive even on transportation time compared to air transportation that includes time-consuming handling operations in and out of airports.
-Maritime solutions are of course cheaper than air solutions, but some markets accept higher transportation costs to ensure high-quality products on the shelves.
-For seafood exports to the US market, air transportation is a must and we benefit from numerous daily flights from Keflavik to a growing number of US destinations by Icelandair and WOW Air. Icelandair's freighter service to Boston remains a key venue as Boston is still the most important gateway for onward distribution to many US destinations.
-Icelandair's introduction of the Boeing 767 aircraft has also brought in increased capacity compared to the Boeing 757 as it lifts up to 12 tonnes on a flight regards of passenger loads, says Mr Thomsen.
In contrast to Norway, Iceland's seafood exports mainly consist of pelagic fish such as cod, with fresh salmon taking only second place.
Cargo rates for salmon shipments are also significantly lower than other Icelandic fish shipments, leaving salmon shipments with second-priority only on flights.
