Nov 03, 2017 (newstodate): The future of the AN-124 Ruslan freighters in civilian use is still in a limbo due to the military and political conflict between Ukraine and Russia after the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
The airworthiness certificate of the large freighter is held by Antonov while construction and maintenance of the aircraft is performed by the ex-Soviet partner in today's Russia, Aviastar-SP Aircraft Factory in Ulyanovsk, Russia.
The largest operator of the freighter is Russia's Volga-Dnepr Group with 12 aircraft, and the future issue and renewal of the airworthiness certificate remains in the hands of Antonov, in Ukraine.
While official negotiations are still in a stalemate due to the political situation, sources confirm that talks behind closed doors are indeed now going on between the parties to allow the Ukrainian state enterprise Antonov to extend the airworthiness of the aircraft of the Russian company Volga-Dnepr in Ulyanovsk, in return for a similar agreement on the continued certification of the IL-76 freighters in Ukrainian service.
The certificate for the AN-124 Ruslan freighter must be verified for every 4,000 flight hours even despite the life cycle is set at 50,000 flight hours.
