Nov 10, 2017 (newstodate): The arrival of a second carrier to offer scheduled services connecting the Faroe Islands and Denmark has made a significant impact on the Vagar Airport cargo statistics in 2017.
With the October 2017 volumes still to be reported, the airport has been handling a total of 433 tonnes of cargo during January-September 2017 which is an increase by 30.2 percent, y-o-y.
During the same period, airmail volumes were also up by 13.1 percent to 188 tonnes.
The rise in cargo and mail occurred from March 2017 - reflecting the first flight by SAS between Copenhagen and Vagar Airport performed on March 27, 2017, introducing competition on the route until then served only by the Faroe Islands' own carrier, Atlantic Airways since 1988.
On the passenger side, the airport is also seeing brisk growth in 2017, with volumes up 17 percent during the first 10 months of this year.
So far, this year a record number of 300,469 passengers have used Vagar Airport - more than the 2016 full-year volumes at 292,383 passengers.
