Oct 26, 2017 (newstodate): Kazakhstan has decided to extend the "open skies" experiment launched in connection to the World Expo 2017 in the Kazakh capital Astana in summer 2017.
During the EXPO, foreign airlines were allowed to make daily direct flights to Astana, Kazakhstan, without restraints.
As a result, the country saw an increase in passengers flying into Astana by 88 percent, y-o-y, as 10 international airlines offered flights from a spree of destinations including Warsaw, Budapest, Helsinki, Beijing and Batumi.
Among these new airlines was Finnair with two weekly flights between Helsinki and Astana, from June 20 to August 11, 2017, using airbus A319 aircraft.
Kazakhstan's aviation authorities have now decided to prolong the open skies mode with the restriction that no airline may operate more then seven weekly rotations on flights to Astana.
