Oct 03, 2017 (newstodate): In 2017, the Latvian carrier airBaltic launched the process of selecting a future replacement of its current fleet of short and medium haul aircraft.
-According to our business plan Horizon 2021, airBaltic is carrying out discussions with aircraft manufacturers to identify the optimal solution to replace the existing 12 Bombardier Q400 aircraft starting from 2020. At the beginning, the order is planned for 14 aircraft with deliveries starting from 2020, including options for additional aircraft as the airline seeks expansion of its business, Alise Briede, airBaltic Head of Corporate Communications told newstodate in June 2017.
Now the search seems to have ended, with a decision looming for choosing Bombardier CS aircraft aiming also to have a unified fleet.
According to a Polish media interviewing airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss, airBaltic will place an order for "at least" 14 CS300 aircraft, with options to switch some of these into the smaller CS100 aircraft.
With deliveries to start from 2020, the airline will then gradually phase out the fleet of 12 Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft, the first of which was delivered in November 2009.
In the fleet of airBaltic are also 11 Boeing 737 aircraft that will be phased out also by the CS300 aircraft, seven of which have now been delivered out of the order for a total of 20 aircraft.
