Jan 05, 2017 (newstodate): In 2016, Estonia's Tallinn Airport saw passenger volumes up by 2.5 percent, y-o-y, to 2,221,615 passengers, compared to the previous record set in 2012, when the airport scored 2,206,791 passengers.
-The 2016 result was achieved thanks to the global fuel prices situation yielding positive results for the entire aviation industry, it seems, and also increased competition at Tallinn Airport between the carriers, contributing towards more seats at lower rates, leading to increased traffic volumes, says Priit Koff, Tallinn Airport Public and International Relations Manager.
-While passenger numbers on scheduled flights increased, the volume of passengers on charter flights dropped, reflecting the deteriorating stability in many leisure destinations.
-We hope to improve our result by at least five per cent in 2017, also due to Estonia's EU presidency in the 2nd half of 2017 and increased connectivity, with Nordica to fly to Hamburg and British Airways launching the London Heathrow connection in March, says Mr Koff.
In 2016, Tallinn Airport was connected to 23 year-round destinations with summer routes increasing the number to 34.
Among the airlines serving Tallinn Airport, Nordica, airBaltic, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Finnair ranked highest on the list.
The Estonian carrier Nordica also reports having attained a share of 18 percent of the passengers through Tallinn Airport, gaining a 10 percentage-points distance to the #2 largest airline serving the airport, the Latvian carrier airBaltic.
