Jan 30, 2017 (newstodate): In 2016, Latvia's Riga airport bolstered its position as the leading airport in the Baltic region, counting 44 percent of the total passenger figures in the region.
A total of 5.4 million passengers was handled at the airport, an increase by five percent, y-o-y, of which more than 50 percent were carried by the national airline airBaltic, 18.3 percent by Ryanair, and 8.5 percent by Wizz Air.
Also significant in a regional context is the fact that in 2016 the number of transfer/transit passengers increased by 15.3 percent and accounting for 27.3 percent of the total number of passengers handled.
The role of Riga Airport as a regional transit hub in the Baltic region is thus also demonstrated, with Tallinn, Vilnius, Moscow, Helsinki and St Petersburg as the most popular transit destinations traveling via Riga Airport.
