Jan 27, 2017 (newstodate): The Russian city Rostov-on-Don is to have a new airport, with the existing airport to be decommissioned in December 2017.
The new green-field airport, now named Rostov-on-Don Platov Airport is being built for the 2018 World Cup and aims for a role in connecting flights between Asia, the CIS and Europe.
Now handling 2.3 mio passengers a year, the existing Rostov-on-Don Airport has exceeded its passenger capacity, and due to its location in the city center has limited potential for expansion.
The new airport will cover 50,600sq m with capacity to handling up to five million passengers annually, with a 3,600 m runways to facilitate the addition of more long-haul destinations to the region's route network.
The new airport will become a hub of a new Russian regional carrier under formation, Azimuth Airlines that will provide domestic flights in Russia's south region.
Plans are to acquire an initial batch of four Superjet 100 aircraft to serve a network of some 20 destinations, with the launch of services so far slated for summer 2017.
