Jan 24, 2017 (newstodate): Iran is seeing western and Asian airlines queuing up for launch of new flights to the country's capital airport at Tehran.
As reported by Iranian media, the Deputy Director of Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport Kourosh Fatahi has confirmed that the airport is now negotiating with Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada and Qantas Airways, Air Canada has aired its interest in operating flights from Montreal to Tehran, and in November 2016 Iran and Australia agreed to launch direct flights.
And with the lifting of US and other international sanctions on Iran, the country's trade with the world is rapidly increasing.
According to the fresh 2017 Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index, Iran has climbed eight spots in the Index rankings to 18th overall and leaped to 9th from No. 15 among emerging markets countries that executives view as having the most potential to grow as logistics markets.
Iran's gains were the biggest of any country in the Index or the survey.
This has so far not tempted Nordic or Baltic carriers to launch direct air services to Iran, leaving Iran Air alone in serving the route between Tehran and Stockholm, while Mahan Air is also present in the Scandinavian market with direct flights between Tehran and Copenhagen.
The latest attempt to launch flights between the Scandinavian/Baltic markets and Iran was aired by the start of 2010 as the Latvian carrier airBaltic announced the launch of services between Riga and Tehran from June 8, 2010, with three weekly rotations with Boeing 737 aircraft.
The flights were entered into the carrier's booking system - but were soon deleted, and the route plan was dropped due to the upcoming sanctions.
