Jan 13, 2017 (newstodate): Finnair is struggling to increase its aircraft capacity to match its growth in passenger volumes on the long-haul routes.
On the order book are delivery of 19 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, but due to the slip in the original delivery scheme Finnair currently has to lease in extra capacity to bridge the temporary gap.
Cockpit crew A350 training is also forcing Finnair to add external capacity as the training is performed on simulators in Miami, Singapore and Taipei pending the commissioning of the carrier's own simulator at Helsinki later in spring 2017.
In the fleet are now seven Airbus A350, and the carrier plans to take in another four in 2017, with the 8th delivery by March 2017.
But already now, Finnair is considering the option of swapping some of the A350-900 deliveries with the larger Airbus A350-1000 aircraft that will allow for carrying up to 366 passengers albeit with a penalty on the range.
In Finnair's long-haul fleet are also one Airbus A340-300 and eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
