Jan 25, 2017 (newstodate): Finnair will go to any lengths to please its crucial Asian customer base - now also introducing the Chinese payment system, AliPay.
As the first airline in the world, Finnair plans to introduce the world's largest online payment platform Alipay for on-board payments.
Finnair will trial the application on its route between Helsinki and Shanghai starting from January 27.
Finnair is partnering with Finland's leading e-payment platform ePassi to offer Alipay as an official payment method on-board flights connecting Shanghai and Helsinki for inflight purchases such as tax free items or buy themselves an Economy Comfort seat through the app by scanning a QR code
In addition, the Finnair lounge in the non-Schengen area at Helsinki Airport will also accept Alipay as will also an increasing number of shops and other service providers at Helsinki Airport.
Alipay will first be made available for a month on a trial basis, and decisions on future roll-outs will be made after the trial period.
And Finnair's decision may prove a success: Alipay has over 450 million active users in China and is used by over 60 percent of Chinese people traveling abroad.
