Jan 10, 2017 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo launched the implementation of its new CMS system SkyChain on December 1, 2016 - but not without some difficulties and teething troubles..
-Even if SkyChain, developed by Mercator, is an off-the-shelf system we still met more difficulties than expected in the early days of the implementation, says Janne Tarvainen, Finnair VP and Head of Cargo.
-The system as such has been working very nicely from the start, providing rich and perfect data and with no issues as such. The problem in the implementation phase has been rather on the human side, even despite strong efforts in training people to handle the procedures.
-While the system's data quality is perfect, and FWB, AWB and other formats are fixed, many discrepancies occur as individual operators along the line make human mistakes and errors and do not meet the set criteria. This was indeed a big surprise to us. More than half of the messages handled were actually incorrect due to often minor erroneous data inputs.
-So, after all the implementation was not as easy as we would have liked it, and it did generate a backlog for a period. Now I would say we are back to business, the backlog was soon cleared and things are working well.
-The implementation was itself slightly delayed, so we run into the pre-Christmas peak which was not too good. On the other hand we could not delay it further as we would then impact on the opening and implementation of our new cargo terminal that presupposes the full implementation of SkyChain.
-We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused, but as said we are back in business with the new cargo management system as our backbone and real game-changer, says Mr Tarvainen.
