Jan 23, 2017 (newstodate): Serbia has become only the second European state to be granted visa-fee travels to China.
The arrangement took effect from January 1, 2017, and has raised hopes in Serbia for the launch of direct air services between the two markets.
At a pres conference in Serbia on January 22, 2017, the country's prime minister confirmed that talks are already underway with a yet undisclosed Chinese carrier, and expectations are that a new direct route between Serbia and China will be announced later this year.
Speculations are that the potential Chinese partner may be found within the HNA Group including Beijing Capital Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
Until 2000, the Serb carrier JAT still operated direct flights between Belgrade and Beijing.
According to the Chinese Ambassador to Serbia, cited in Serbian media in October 2016, no less than three Chinese carriers are vying for setting up flights between China and Serbia, and expectations are that one of these will actually launch flights between Beijing and Belgrade from Spring 2017, already.
