Jan 09, 2017 (newstodate): Due to icy conditions, the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner into Riga Airport was spared the traditional water fountain ceremony as it made its entry into Latvia's Riga Airport on January 6, 2017.
The Boeing 787 aircraft is operated by Uzbekistan Airways on the route between Tashkent and New York via a transit stop at Riga Airport and is now complementing the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on the route.
Since October 31, 2004, Uzbekistan Airways has been using Riga Airport as a transit hub on its twice-weekly flights between Tashkent and New York, and for a period it was uncertain if Uzbekistan Airways would actually cut out Riga as an en-route stop as the Boeing 787 aircraft would make a nonstop flight feasible.
Since October 23, 2004, airBaltic and Uzbekistan Airways have cooperated under a code-share agreement covering the flights between Tashkent and Riga, and from July 2015, this agreement was expanded to comprise also the flights by the Uzbek carrier between Riga and New York.
Uzbekistan Airways took delivery of its first two Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in 2016 and has now placed orders for a further four aircraft.
