Jan 31, 2017 (newstodate): Armenia is now making fresh efforts to set up a new national carrier after the series of aborted attempts following the demise of the carrier Armavia in April 2013.
The latest new project is a new carrier to be established in cooperation with Russia and to operate a fleet of Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.
The issue was on the agenda during talks last week between the Armenian and Russian Prime Ministers in Moscow that was expected to result in a MoU, yet unannounced, between the two ministries.
Armavia was actually the world's first carrier to operate the Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft, in commercial service from April 21, 2011, a second aircraft was due for delivery, but eventually Armavia's Superjet aircraft were stored in Russia after a deep conflict between the carrier and the Russian party. As the aircraft had stood idle in Russia since August 2012, the manufacturer released it for sale to another airline in 2013, and Armavia folded its wings.
After Armavia, Air Armenia, Armenian International Airways and Krunk Air all tried to fill the gap - but with no lasting success.
